My Background

Mediums I Work With!

I am a self taught freelance artist from Leicester in the United Kingdom, and I specialise in fine art and pet portrait commisions using either oil paints, graphite or coloured pencils.

I have loved art and drawing from a very early age, and back then i used it as a way of focusing my thoughts and keeping my mind active. Fast forward 30 ye

I am a self taught freelance artist from Leicester in the United Kingdom, and I specialise in fine art and pet portrait commisions using either oil paints, graphite or coloured pencils.

I have loved art and drawing from a very early age, and back then i used it as a way of focusing my thoughts and keeping my mind active. Fast forward 30 years and my hobby has became my passion.

I worked at The University of Nottingham in an administrative role, up until 2016 when I was diagnosed with a very rare brain condition (Chiari Malformation) and needed major brain surgery!

I was unable to stay in the job I loved and once I recovered enough, I needed something I could do in less hours.

I met my boyfriend Steve (who has the same brain condition as myself!) and from that point, my whole direction in life changed. I knew what I wanted to do. Art!

In October 2018 I set up my first business Feather Rose Designs Professional Face Painting. Within the first 3 months the business grew and expanded and I added more things to the business. It has since become a full party entertainment business. Working mainly weekends and earning enough to pay the bills, I now had the spare time I needed to focus on my love of fine art.

I took a leap into the unknown, and Feather Rose Designs Fine Art ( F R D Fine Art) was born!

Mediums I Work With!

My preferred mediums are coloured pencil, graphite and oil paints. I use only the highest quality materials to ensure I get the detail and results I need.

I absolutely love Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencils. They are 100% lightfast, which means the colours won't fade for up to 100 years. These are oil based pencils and can be blended to

My preferred mediums are coloured pencil, graphite and oil paints. I use only the highest quality materials to ensure I get the detail and results I need.

I absolutely love Derwent Lightfast Coloured Pencils. They are 100% lightfast, which means the colours won't fade for up to 100 years. These are oil based pencils and can be blended to create a paint effect using Odourless Mineral Spirits. Or you can blend using another pencil, usually a lighter colour, which gives a really smooth effect and an amazing end result that will last! I also like to use Faber Castell polychromos coloured pencils too.

I currently use Winsor and Newton oil paints, either the Artist or Winton range for my oil portraits, and use only the highest quality canvases available.

I'm always happy with a pencil in my hand and for sketching, I'm really not fussed what make it is.

But for portraits etc, I seem to end up buying either Derwent or Faber-Castell. As long as there is a range containing 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B and 6B then I personally think that is sufficient. I have had sets with 9H through to 9B but for me, the H ones are not really used.

For information, graphite pencils come in a series of hardness, with 9H being the hardest (very brittle, super fine) and 9B being the softest. The softer the pencil, the easier it is to blend. The harder the pencil, the finer detail you can get. I generally use a HB to sketch my outline and then blend using 2B, 4B and 6B.
